What is Network-as-a-Service (NaaS)?

By Join Digital Inc.

Network-as-a-Service (NaaS) is a business model where networking services and applications are provided to customers as-a-Service. Think SaaS, but for Networking and IT Infrastructure.

Instead of investing in expensive physical hardware and the staff to maintain it, organizations can subscribe to NaaS offerings to receive the networking resources they require. This service-based approach can cover areas like Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), Wide Area Networking (WAN), bandwidth on-demand, and other network services.

Key Benefits of NaaS:

  1. Cost-Efficiency: Eliminates the need for upfront capital expenditure on hardware and reduces costs associated with network maintenance.
  2. Scalability: Organizations can easily scale their network resources up or down based on demand.
  3. Flexibility: Quick deployment of new services or changes to the network.
  4. Latest Technologies: Providers typically keep the backend updated with the latest technologies, ensuring subscribers always have access to modern networking capabilities.
  5. Managed Security: NaaS providers often include security features and updates as part of their service.

Network-as-a-Service (NaaS) is a broad category, encompassing various services and solutions provided to customers as-a-Service. Below are the key components of NaaS:

  1. Cloud-Based Management: The heart of NaaS is its ability to manage and provision network resources from the cloud. This centralized management allows for real-time updates, configurations, and oversight from virtually anywhere.
  2. Connectivity Services: These include services such as Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), bandwidth-on-demand, Software-Defined Wide Area Networks (SD-WAN), and direct cloud connections.
  3. Software-Defined Networking (SDN): SDN decouples the network's control (brains) and forwarding (muscle) planes, allowing for centralized management and increased flexibility.
  4. Network Function Virtualization (NFV): It enables network functions to be hosted on virtual machines. This means that functions like routing, load balancing, and firewalls are no longer tied to specific hardware but can be provisioned wherever needed within the network.
  5. Security Services: Integrated security features like firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems, secure web gateways, and other security-as-a-service solutions are often a part of the NaaS offering.
  6. Analytics and Visibility Tools: NaaS platforms typically provide detailed analytics regarding network performance, user behavior, and security incidents. This insight is crucial for optimizing the network and addressing issues proactively.
  7. Automation and Orchestration: These features allow for automated provisioning, configuration, and management of network resources based on policies and real-time conditions.
  8. Network Edge Services: This includes services provided at the edge of the network, like Content Delivery Network (CDN) services or edge compute capabilities, which place resources closer to the end-users.
  9. Integration and APIs: For NaaS solutions to be flexible and adaptable, they often provide APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) and integration points. This allows them to work seamlessly with other tools and systems within an organization's IT environment.
  10. Service Level Agreements (SLAs): Given the service-based nature of NaaS, providers offer SLAs that guarantee certain levels of uptime, performance, and response times.
  11. Scalability: One of the hallmarks of NaaS is its ability to scale. Whether an organization needs to expand its bandwidth, add new sites, or provision new services, NaaS solutions can usually handle these requirements without the need for significant infrastructure changes.
